Originally planted in 1868 by Hamilton Crabb, the To Kalon vineyard has produced some of the Napa Valley’s best Cabernet Sauvignon ever since gaining legendary status as one of America’s first-growth vineyards. To Kalon, Ancient Greek for “the highest beauty,” sits on prime Oakville bench land where well-drained, gravelly soils combine with optimal sun exposure to yield rich, complex flavors and impeccable fruit maturity.

The 2023 Amici Beckstoffer To Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon is a bold, concentrated expression of this legendary Oakville vineyard. The nose opens with intense notes of blackberry brandy cordial and cocoa powder, signaling the wine’s depth and richness. This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard and aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak. Drawn from two separate blocks, the vines were planted in 1996 to Clone 4. Impressively polished and supremely suave, the wine is full-bodied and layered, shaped by velvety-textured tannins – that iron fist in a velvet glove character. Scorched-earth notes underscore a spectrum of blue-black and red fruit, all carried by a deep, earthy, mineral-driven finish that is a defining hallmark of this iconic site.

Black color with terra-cotta, cocoa powder, fresh lead pencil, bark and mushrooms. Full-bodied and layered with juicy, lightly ripe fruit. Medium to long finish. Very polished for To Kalon cabernet sauvignon. Drinkable but better in two or three years.

The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is dazzling. Crushed flowers, mint and spice overtones meld into a core of blue/purplish fruit. This is one of the most elegant, refined Cabernets I have tasted from To Kalon, where the wines can sometimes be very intense. This is seriously impressive.
