“vibrant notes of black raspberries and kirsch”

Vineyard Notes

Originally planted in 1868 by Hamilton Crabb, the To Kalon vineyard has produced some of the Napa Valley’s best Cabernets ever since gaining legendary status as one of America’s first-growth vineyards. To Kalon, Ancient Greek for “the highest beauty,” sits on prime Oakville bench land where well-drained, gravelly soils combine with optimal sun exposure to yield rich, complex flavors and impeccable fruit maturity.

Winemaking Notes

The 2023 Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Franc — a blend of 76% Cabernet Franc and 24% Cabernet Sauvignon — opens with a captivating and complex nose of smoked meat, dried tobacco, and vibrant bright red fruits that leap effortlessly from the glass. True to the storied To Kalon terroir, the aromatics are both precise and deeply expressive. On the palate, the wine is nothing short of stunning — exceptional acidity and remarkable perfume define the mid-palate, while beautifully layered, grainy tannins provide the kind of structure that only this legendary Oakville vineyard can deliver. Classic Napa Valley Cabernet Franc at its most compelling, with extraordinary length and a long, mineral-laced finish that lingers beautifully. Approachable now with decanting, this wine has the depth, structure, and purity to cellar magnificently for 15–20 years.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, The Wine Palate

The 2023 Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Franc is made from 76% Cabernet Franc, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep garnet-purple colored, it leaps with vibrant notes of black raspberries and kirsch, leading to a core of wild blueberries, pencil shavings, menthol, and cedar, with a touch of iron ore. The full-bodied palate delivers a firm frame of grainy tannins with a lively line defining the earth-laced black fruit layers, finishing long and ferrous.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous

The 2023 Cabernet Franc Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is co-fermented with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon, an approach that works so well here. Today, the 2023 is a bit reticent and tightly coiled, but that should not be an issue in another few years; time. Franc aromatics and saline undertones begin to appear with a bit of time in the glass. This is a serious wine, but it’s also embryonic. Patience is required.

Aromas of blackberries with some thyme and other herbs. Full-bodied with polished tannins that are velvety yet rather chewy and lightly drying. Wood at the end. Medium finish. Drink or hold.
