Missouri Hopper, one of Napa’s oldest vineyards, consists of 45 contiguous acres on the famed Oakville Bench in the Napa Valley. Purchased by Charles Hopper and given to his daughter Missouri in 1877, today Missouri Hopper is owned by the Beckstoffer family, and the fruit from this vineyard is some of the most sought after in the Napa Valley. Wines from the Missouri Hopper Vineyard consistently display the complex profile of power with refinement that is a hallmark of the celebrated Oakville Bench appellation.

Winemaking Notes

The 2023 Missouri Hopper Cabernet Sauvignon is a focused, savory expression of this famed Oakville site. The nose opens with notes of cured meats, herbes de Provence, and lavender, layering aromatic complexity over the dark fruit core. On the palate, cocoa powder and cassis take the lead, supported by round, rich, velvety tannins and precise acidity that give the wine both depth and lift. Aged 19 months in 100% new French oak, this single-vineyard Cabernet marries power with refinement, promising excellent evolution in the cellar.

Balance with structure and complexity. Intense blackberry, lead-pencil, iodine and oyster-shell aromas. Medium-bodied with superpolished, round tannins that are endless in the finish. Goes on and on. Stunning. Archetypal Napa Valley at a top level. Incredible quality. Best wine ever from this winery. Drinkable but better in a couple of years.

Brought up 19 months in 100% new French oak, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper Vineyard exhibits a Graves-like perfume of pure crème de cassis, smoked tobacco, gravelly earth, and chocolate. Full-bodied on the palate, it has a pure, layered, round mouthfeel, ample mid-palate depth, and a great finish. I love its purity, focus, and balance, as well as its texture, and this is another sensational wine in the lineup. Drink 2025-2043.
