Vineyard Notes

Missouri Hopper, one of Napa’s oldest vineyards, consists of 45 contiguous acres on the famed Oakville Bench in the Napa Valley. Purchased by Charles Hopper and given to his daughter Missouri in 1877, today Missouri Hopper is owned by the Beckstoffer family, and the fruit from this vineyard is some of the most sought after in the Napa Valley. Wines from the Missouri Hopper Vineyard consistently display the complex profile of power with refinement that is a hallmark of the celebrated Oakville Bench appellation.

Winemaking Notes

The 2022 Missouri Hopper Cabernet Sauvignon is both powerful and polished. The nose reveals classic camphor, Bordeaux-like herbal notes, red fruit, and currant bud. On the palate, the wine is super supple and rich, with flavors of Bing cherry, ripe plum, and hoisin, transitioning from red fruit on the nose to black fruit and cocoa on the palate. A firm tannic backbone provides structure, while the mouthfeel remains lush and inviting.

Smoky black fruits, leafy tobacco, chocolate, and sappy, floral, herbal nuances (I always find a Bordeaux-like aromatic quality from this site) all shine in the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper Vineyard, another ripe, concentrated, beautifully textured and seamless 2022. It’s balanced and has a concentrated mid-palate, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It’s not going to be the longest-lived example of this cuvée, but it brings a beautiful richness while staying graceful, elegant, and oh-so-drinkable.

Decanter

The 2022 Amici Missouri Hopper Vineyard in Oakville is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 22 months in 100% new French oak. In 2022, this wine showcases an abundance of richness, with red- and black-toned fruits, sweet spices, and iron-scented tannins that are firm yet superfine on the palate. The mid-palate density is balanced and builds in concentration, with the tannins resolving beautifully through the full-bodied finish. The fruit is lush, ripe, and sweet, harmonised by a saline, mineral-driven through-line, adding depth and integrity.

Aromas of red currants, blackcurrants, graphite and terra cotta that follow through to a medium to full body with ripe fruit and just a hint of jam. It turns firm and juicy at the end. Typical valley fruit character. Drink or hold.

Vinous

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper Vineyard is an attractive, soft-textured, mid-weight wine. Black cherry, plum, gravel, incense, dried rose petal and espresso all build in the glass. Creamy and medium in body, with fine depth, the 2022 has a lot to recommend it.
