Vineyard Notes

Morisoli Vineyard consists of 53 contiguous acres on the famed Rutherford Bench in the Napa Valley. Gary Morisoli is the fourth generation of his family to grow grapes on this historic property, which has been family-farmed for over 100 years. Primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, the fruit from this vineyard is some of the most sought after in the Napa Valley. Surrounded by Staglin Family Vineyard, Scarecrow, Joseph Phelps Vineyards and Inglenook, Morisoli Vineyard fruit exhibits classic “Rutherford Dust” qualities and rich Cabernet Sauvignon character.

Winemaking Notes

The 2017 Morisoli is a quintessential Rutherford wine, with rich brambleberry notes and Rutherford dust on the nose. Savory flavors of tobacco, coffee, cocoa and tart cherry create a savory, luscious mouthfeel, laden with blackberry jam, licorice and hints of herbs de Provence through the palate. A pure, silky finish shows bright acidity, mouthwatering redcurrant notes and firm tannins.

“The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Morisoli Vineyard is a rich, heady wine. Blueberry jam, spice, lavender, menthol and licorice burst from the glass in an ample, full-bodied Rutherford Cabernet that is loaded with personality. Broad and plush with tremendous tannic heft and intensity, the Morisoli just screams with personality. This has really come together over the last year. The 2017 finishes with tremendous nervy energy and vibrancy.”

“The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Morisoli Vineyard comes from a site just beside Scarecrow and just screams “Cabernet!” on the nose with its pure currant fruits as well as notes of tobacco, chocolate, herbes de Provence, and smoked earth. It’s a more Bordeaux’ish release from this team and is medium to full-bodied and elegant, with bright acidity and a great finish. This is another wine that will benefit from a handful of years in the cellar.”

“The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Morisolli is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 22 months in 100% new French Taransaud, Sylvain and Darnajou barrels. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it has a wonderfully pure, beguiling nose of warm redcurrants, fresh blackberries and crushed blackcurrants with hints of pencil shavings, tilled earth, lavender and truffles. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has bags of freshness and spritely red and black fruits, with a grainy texture and provocative lift to the finish.”

James Suckling

“Very fruity with lots of pure, crushed-blueberry and floral aromas. Full body, creamy and round tannins and a juicy finish. A rather big style, but shows firmness and chewiness. Generous and tense. Drink after 2021.”

“Frankly ripe style, with dark plum, fig and blackberry compote flavors laced with a touch of licorice root and singed vanilla through the finish. Has enough spine for balance and will have fans for immediate appeal. Drink now through 2027.”
